Love, Money, Both-One or None?

Caili, is also called bride money, it’s an amount of money or items traditionally given by the groom's family to the bride's family during engagement. The form can be cash, gold, jewleries, house, cars, and etc. It sounds similar like dowry, But they’re different. Caili is given by the man's family to the woman's family during engagement, while dowry is items prepared by the bride's parents for their daughter to take to the new family on the wedding day.

Historically, marriage is led by parents and matchmakers, and women have no decision-making rights in marriage, so there’s no or very limited love before marriage, marriage is more a contract. And Caili serves the function of guaranteeing the fulfillment of the marriage contract
